New York City Dog Park Etiquette

    Last updated 1 year ago

For a devoted pet owner, few sights are as heartwarming as that of a happy pet. A dog park offers a wonderful occasion for your pet to romp and play, an opportunity that is particularly important for city pets. In order to ensure the safety and health of your dog as well as the other animals at the park, however, it’s important that you keep these rules in mind:

    • Have your pet receive all the proper immunizations before taking it to a dog park. It’s also a good idea to discuss your dog’s health with a veterinarian before going to a dog park for the first time.
    • No dogs younger than four months of age should be taken to dog parks, and owners should make sure to socialize their dogs—allowing them to mix with other dogs in a positive way—to ensure that they know how to behave around other pets.
    • You must supervise your dog at all times. Do not allow yourself to become distracted by cell phone conversations or text messages; even a well-behaved dog needs your continual attention. If your dog is especially sensitive, do not go to a crowded dog park.
    • Never take a dog that is in heat to a dog park. It’s best to have a pet neutered before you begin taking it to parks.
    • Don’t take your dog off the leash unless it has learned to respond to your commands.
    • Don’t give your dog treats or toys in front of other dogs. This confuses the other animals and may lead to a fight. If your dog is behaving roughly with other dogs or is being bullied by another dog, take your dog and leave the park right away.
    • Always clean up after your dog before you leave the park.

How Your Pet May Benefit From Acupuncture Therapy

    Last updated 1 year ago

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that involves applying heat or pressure—often by using very tiny needles—to certain points on the skin. While it has been used to treat humans for thousands of years, it isn’t commonly known that it can be used to treat animals. Indeed, pet acupuncture has become an increasingly popular procedure, and an increasing number of veterinarians are recommending it to pet owners.

Acupuncture therapy may be used to treat a wide range of conditions in animals, including musculoskeletal disorders, skin conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, and even neurological disorders. It can be used to help relax pets’ muscles, improve circulation, and speed up healing after an injury. It can calm anxious animals, increase their appetites, and help improve bowel functions. It has even been shown to help stimulate immunity by increasing the production of white blood cells.

The benefits of acupuncture are particularly noticeable for pets that have arthritis. One study of 65 severely arthritic dogs found that more than three-fourths of the patients experienced significant improvement—50% or better—after treatment with acupuncture, and were able to be more mobile. More than 95% of all the dogs remained calm and comfortable during the procedure.

Other conditions that acupuncture can help a pet with include:

    • Joint disease.
    • Kidney failure.
    • Nasal discharge.
    • Lower urinary tract disease.
    • Fatty liver disease.
    • Pancreatitis.

For obvious reasons, a pet can’t tell you how well acupuncture or another alternative treatment is working. That’s why it’s important to work with a trained, experienced specialist who can ensure that your pet is receiving the most proficient treatment possible and who can determine whether the treatment is having the desired effect.

If you are interested in learning more about the potential benefits of acupuncture for your pet, call Heart of Chelsea Animal Hospital, a pet hospital in New York City. At Heart of Chelsea, we believe that pets deserve state-of-the-art care. Our veterinarians combine the best of Western conventional medicine and Eastern holistic treatments. How to Care for Your Senior Pet

    Last updated 1 year ago

If your dog is eight years of age or older—or six or older if you own a larger breed of dog—then it may be considered a senior. Veterinarians recommend that you take your senior pet in for an examination every six months. Dogs age much more quickly than we do, and a veterinarian can pick up on potential health problems that a pet owner will not be able to detect. Is your dog receiving the necessary nutrients or getting enough exercise? A regular senior pet examination can provide the answers to those questions.

Heart of Chelsea Animal Hospital is a New York City pet hospital that is committed to providing first-rate traditional and holistic care for pets. To schedule an appointment for your pet, call us today at (917) 675-3708.
